Dr. (Honr) Maryam Bibi

Chief Executive

Maryam Bibi comes from a small village in the Frontier Region of Bannu in Pakistan. Despite the conservative and patriarchal culture of the region, Maryam was able to acquire an education. She obtained her M.Phil. in Social Policy from the University of York, UK in 2008 and has conducted a research study on gender and women and children related issues in FATA.

Maryam Bibi’s early experience also led her to become the founder and Chief Executive of Khwendo Kor . This NGO is based in Pakistan and works in the remote and undeveloped areas of the Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It sets out to improve the education, health and economic well-being of women and their children and thus to strengthen both them and their communities and give them greater control over their own lives. Maryam Bibi has played a key role in the growth and development of Khwendo Kor, which began in 1993 in a single village with four staff members, and now works in more than 300 villages and has 343 staff. More geographical expansion as per as program.

In addition to her work for Khwendo Kor, Maryam Bibi contributes to the work of many different national and international organizations. She serves on the boards of the Society for Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC),; The full board member of Humanitarian Accountability Partnership. The boards of FATA Education Agency, the Elementary Education Foundation (EEF) of the Government of KPK; Beijing + 15 ; KASHAF; the Dost Foundation and the SUNGI Development Foundation. She contributes to the work of the Social Welfare Department of the Government of the Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa Province; the Women’s Study Centre, University of Peshawar; the NWFP Women’s Writers’ Forum; the Asian South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education (ASPABE) and member of National Commission on the status of Women consisting. Actively involve in peace movement in Aman Tehreek (Provincial level) and Aman Iteehad (National level). Actively participated “Training course on Women .Peace and security” in Holland

Her efforts for women and children empowerment have been acknowledged by different national and international organizations. Her awards include:

  • Engro I am the change 2013 award from the Engro Corporation Limited in April 2014

  • Honorary Doctorate offer from University of York, UK and received in July 2011

  • Human Rights award from President of Pakistan – 2010

  • Fatima Jinah Medal’ award for outstanding women in the social sector – 2003 and 2010

  • UN ‘Recognition of Services’ Award - 2000

  • Pakistan National Civil Award Sitar-e- Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) - 2001

  • Human Rights Award from ILO - 2001

  • ‘Nominated as one of ‘1000 Women’ for Nobel Peace Prize - 2005

  • IUCN ‘Outstanding Woman Working on Climate Change–Cartaganadores’ award - 2007

  • A Synergos Senior Fellow – 2008
